Summer Learning Journey - Day #4 : Hitting a High Note...

Hey bloggers! Today is Day #4 of the Summer Learning Journey! Wow! I can't believe that it's Day 4 already! Well anyways let's start today!

Activity 1 : The Waiata - A Song In Your Heart

In the past Maori People often used songs as communicating to others or telling different stories. A waiata is the name of a traditional song. One of Rachel's favourite songs are Kia Paimarie! I have been asked to research a Maori Waiata on Google, listen to the lyrics and find a favourite. I didn't need to research any waiata on Google. At School we sing heaps of waiata and have a favourite.  Name of my favourite waiata is : Tai Aroha

I have also been asked to name why it's my favourite waiata. Well it's a really beautiful song with relaxing gutair chords, beautiful singing and more lovely stuff. Now that's my favourite waiata. What's yours? Comment down below!

Activity 2 : Playing Games

Hundreds of years ago Maori children were taught to play traditional games such as :  Poi Rakau, Ki O Rahi, Koruru Taonga and Poi Toa. I have been asked to click on the links of the games and read each text including instructions, what you need and how to play!

Then I have been asked to choose one of the games and on my blog I have to tell you the name of the game, the goal or the purpose of the game and the rules. I have decided to choose the game Koruru Taonga also known as " Knucklebones ".

Name of the game : Koruru Taonga or Knucklebones

What you need : 5 stones around the same size of a 20 cent coin and some Floor Space.

The Goal or Purpose : To throw the stones in the air and try catch them only using your knuckles.

Rules of the game :

You cannot catch it with your hand.

You cannot throw it a short distance in the air.

You can research more.

 Instructions of the game:

1. Hold the 5 stones in your palm.

2. Then slightly throw it in the air.

3. Then try catching the stones using your knucklebones.

If 5 stones land on your knucklebones then you simply have 5 points or you won!

Bonus Activity : Musical Festivals - Matatini

In New Zealand, a huge festival is held every two years, called Te Matatini. This performing arts festival celebrates the tikanga (culture or customs) of Māori. Kapa Haka groups from around New Zealand are invited to attend the festival and each group gives a 25-minute performance. The performances are judged and the best teams win prizes.

A Matatini Performance!

I have been asked to watch 3 previous Matatini performances on Youtube including :

Te Iti Kahurangi

Te Puku o Te Ika

and rate them from #1 - #3!

Here are my ratings based on the performances:

#1 - Te Puku o Te Ika
#2 - Te Iti Kahurangi
#3 - Tamatea Arikinui

I have chosen Te Puku o Te Ka as #1 because they have outstanding singing, beautiful formation, and lovely costumes. Their songs and waiata were amazing and well sung, however I have chosen Te Iti Kahurangi as #2 because they did have average singing, lovely voices and timing but they could've done dancing and a bit singing a little bit better overall they were awesome! Finally we have Tamatea Arikinui I have ranked #3 mainly because they could work on their singing, formation and dancing. Overall all the groups were amazing and wonderful!

Thank you for reading today's blog post for the Summer Learning Journey!

Mitchell's Extension Game - Reflection

Hey bloggers! Here is my Extension scratch Game reflection I have written about. Enjoy!

During Term 2 the Year 7 & 8 Extension group got the opportunity to make another game on Scratch. Scratch is basically a website full of code, where you can create your own games. Last term in Term 1 we created a game about the environment of Tamaki and how to clean our green space.

Anyways we also got to present those games at the Te Oro Manaiakalani Exhibition. Well this term we have been starting to create a game about this term’s topic Now that’s Thinking and the game is based about Space and the Maori New Year - Matariki.

I am doing a individual project as my other partners are working on their own one. So far I have started to shoot, move my spaceship, and more. We also had the amazing opportunity to have help from a coding expert from OMG tech Zoe, who helped alot.

Also for the sprites drawn on Hyperstudio - DLO - Tevita, Angelo and I have drawn some sprites for our game. We have drawn a spacecraft, some aliens, lazer guns, stars and heaps more sprites that will be in our game.

I also browsed through some video clips on Youtube, Mrs Lagitupu has put on for us to view. I used some coding I saw on those videos and used it on my own personal game. It was really helpful with both the game and Zoe from OMG tech.

I have only created 1 level as creating a Scratch game is very hard.

The highlights of the game was making the sprites and levels. It was very difficult. Also

Mitchell Riverside Highlights (Monday) 2016

HELLO BLOG VIEWERS !!! Welcome back to my blog. On Friday I came back from Riverside CAMP. It was a really fun experience. This year my team was named the Thunders. I slept in cabin number 1. We did alot of fun activities. Here are some highlights.

Monday (First day of Camp) - Around 6:00 am in the morning I awoke with a big yawn loud enough for my parents to hear in the other room. I slowly made my way down to the kitchen to have breakfast. My sister also had breakfast with me too. Then I brushed my teeth, got ready and watched TV. When it was around 8:00 am my Nana came to pick us up to drop us to school. When we got there other Riversider's were packing their stuff too.

We went to the breeze were we sat down and did the check list to see if everyone was here. Everyone was her and we were ready to go. I hopped on the bus with my friends Noah and Ajani. On the trip to Willow Park we played Yellow Car. You play by spotting a random yellow car while driving in the distance. We finally arrived at Willow Park in Eastern Beach. We drove down the driveway and there we saw the buildings of the cabins.

The bus driver pulled the brakes, the door opened and everyone ran out. I clutched my hands to someone's suitcase and lifted it out to the foyer room. Everyone did the same with different bags. After everyone's bags had been put in we went to the Rimu Room.

We did our first ever activity. It was the running around game. We had a piece of paper and had a whole lot of questions on it. We had to find them out by running around the park.

After that we had afternoon tea,got changed and headed to the beach. After the fun beach games we had showers and had lunch. We got changed and it was time to play the Crunchie hunt. In the dark you had to find Crunchie chocolates. In the end I found 0 but we all got to eat some anyways.

We had our first sleep in our cabins. Make sure that you read what we did on all the other days by checking out my other blogposts I will post.

Mitchell The life of Usain Bolt

In the small town of Sherwood, Trelawny grew an active young boy named Usain. He was so active his parents once took him to the doctors.  But he was alright it was just that running was on top of his hobbie list.
He always failed in school. He always got distracted and concerned about something going on.

Image result for usain boltAs he grew he loved running more and more and starting to want to compete in world competitions.  At the age of 15 he won two times and that encouraged him to go on the world stage. He went to the olympics but he got beat by some other athletes. He trained and trained until the next olympics in 2004.

He finally beat the athletes in Beijing and won gold that was an unforgettable moment. One race he was sprinting
He did not believe in himself. His mum came and said “Just believe in yourself”

From then on he started to believe and kept winning and winning. Usain Bolt has signed up with Gatorade and just recently signed a lifetime contract.

Rio Olympics 2016. Rugby 7's Fiji team 2016

YAYYYY!!! Guess what? FIJI won the rugby 7’s Gold medal for Rio 2016 at the Olympics. They were very blessed because this is Fiji’s first ever medal in history and it was Gold!!! Did you know? That they were the one and only Pacific Island nation to compete in this history-making game.

Image result for fiji rio 2016Fijians all over the world celebrated by Dancing,Singing,Speeding in cars and more crazy stuff. Me and all of my family went to have lunch at Fortuna to celebrate.

Princess Anne of the Royal family presented the 12 gold medals to the rugby players. In fijian culture after you receive something very special you would have to show respect by clapping your hands 3 times. They were very proud of their country and the people of Fiji were very happy and proud.

They said a very blessed and thankful prayer. Another fact is that Frank Bainimarama the (Prime Minister) of Fiji marked that day as a national public holiday.

Mitchell Olympics Writing Extension

Mitchell Week 2 Extension Writing
The mega camera's live stream on TV as they zoom up on the athletes faces. Millions were watching television world wide while crossing their fingers hoping that their favourite athlete would win a gold medal. The feeling of nervousness hits some of the athletes who have stressed out looks. The athletes do some stretching before the race starts. Moments later the official says ‘On your marks’. Then the men were ready and waiting in their starting positions. Some said their final prayers. Their shoes gripped onto the starting blocks. This was the time they had been waiting for.

“GET set” as the crowd went silent.  GO!!! The athletes dashed off into the distance sprinting as hard as they could. Hearts pounding fast to keep up with the other sprinters. The crowd cheered loudly to the point that you couldn’t even hear yourself. 7 seconds passed already and Bolt was 5 meters away. He’s going... he’s speeding up...he crosses the FINISH LINE!!!

Bolt kissed the ground with joy. He cheered with the others in the audience. Everyone celebrated with a big clap and roar. Some of the other athletes were depressed as they did not won an medal.

Mitchell Blues VS Sharks Game Holiday Post #1

Guess What ? Tonight I just came back from the Blue VS Sharks Game at Eden Park.

At 7:00 me and my family all jumped in the car with all our food and drinks and headed off to Eden Park. When we go there we parked on the side of the road and walked down the hill. When we walked into the gates there were thousands of people walking and sitting down on chairs getting ready for the game. We walked in and the security team scanned our tickets. The game started at 7:35 so we were pretty early. When we went to go sit down we went and sat next to the Year 5 & 6 Mixed and Girls team. Everyone was there with Miss Va'afusuaga and Mr Moran. We sat down for a few minutes holding up flags and balloons and then we heard most people cheering and coming in was the Sharks. Then the Blues came walking in. Everyone started cheering and fire flames started coming out of small black holes. Then they were getting on the field. Then the ref whistled out and then the game started. It was a very good game. Blues won against sharks from 23/18. Thanks for reading.

Mitchell Athletics Day 2015 Pt England School.

Hikianalia is the best house colour because we win every year. Our name was Takitimu but we changed it to the boat Hikianalia. Takitimu is the colour yellow. Yellow is the colour of the sun. The Sun is Strong and Hot to blow your face up. Our house colour was the best house colour than all the other house colours. We won every year and we got the best people to win.

On Friday the 13th November 2015 was Athletics Day. I rushed to School and got changed into my Yellow T-Shirt and Black Shorts. I was so excited cause I knew we were going to win again like every other year. I ran into the classroom and put clothes away and we left to the courts.

I was in the Year 5 boys. We went to go do relays. We walked down to the bottom field. At the bottom field were Obstacle Courses and heaps of other stuff. When we went to do relays we had these batons to hold. We had to run to the middle and pass it to that person then that person has to pass it to the person at the end and it keeps on going. We lined up in 5 lines. Then we started. I was at the back of the line waiting for my turn. 3 minutes later it was my turn. I was so nervous I but could do it. My friend Andrew passed me the baton. I ran as fast as I could to the middle. I passed it to Jonathan and Jonathan ran to Tom at the end. Tom ran to me and passed it. Then i ran back to the start and passed it to my Friend Simon. I was so tired after that. We kept on playing until Mr Jacobsen made this noise with the siren. It was really Fun.  We got 50 points. All the other teams got 40,30,20 and 10 points.

It was time to change over. We walked up the bottom field to the top field.  We were going to do Running. I liked Running. I saw 8 straight lines on the side of the field. The first 8 boys went to go line up then we lined up behind them. Mr Burt had this really big wooden thing. He said On your mark, get set and Go.
The first 8 boys ran really fast until they got to the end. I was really scared i was going to trip over or something. Then i saw my mum smiling at me. I wasn’t scared anymore i was now getting excited. Then Mr Burt said On your mark, get set, GO and clapped the wooden thing together. I sprinted as fast as i could. My mum was cheering on the side i ran and ran. I came 2nd to last but my mum was still proud of me. Then i ran again after the last 8 boys. I ran again as fast as i could. I 6th or 7th i think and my mum hugged me. I was so proud of myself even though i never came 1st,2nd or 3rd.

Then it was time to go home. My uncle and aunty came to watch as well. I was proud of my sisters too. They all came 1st in their races. I loved Athletics Day.

Mitchell School Holidays Writing

It was Friday the last day of school. We were all sitting down in the hall for the assembly. At the end Mr Burt said to say Happy Holidays. Then we all said it. Then finally we could all go now. The 12:30 bell rang. Mr Jacobsen was playing the music for the end. I was so happy saying goodbye to all my friends and my teacher Mr Bax too. I was so excited. There was no school for 2 whole weeks.

I ran to go get my sisters and we ran home. When I went home I went to go quickly eat and drink. Then I went to go pack my stuff for Riverside Camp. My sisters were going to the School Holiday Program at our church for one week. On Monday we went to go to School early in the morning at 8:00 in the morning. Riverside camp was so fun.

It was at Willow Park. The workers served us Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner every day. We slept in our cabins with our teams. We had lots of bunk beds. We got our own bed to sleep on. I slept at the top of the bunk bed. At the end there was a big door. That was the girls side were all the girls were sleeping in.

Anyways We had a toilets and showers. We had about 4 showers in the Boys bathroom. Everyday we got to have Free time. When we have Free time we get to play in our Cabins and play outside. Outside were 2 trampolines, a mini golf course, a playground and a really big field.

Every night we had games outside. Like Crunchy hunt to find chocolate and spotlight. We had a disco with lots of colourful lights.
Everyone was dancing. We were all dressed in our best clothes. All of us had fun.

On the last day I couldn't wait to go home we packed all our stuff and left. I said bye to all the kids at Riverside Camp and left. Then it was the 2nd week of the School Holidays. I was going to the School Holiday Program at Church.

At the School Holiday Program all of my friends from church were there. My Uncle Matt,Aunty Kika and Aunty Febi and our other helper Richard were looking after us

We went to places like Jump. When i went to Jump i kept on jumping around. It was so fun. There was even a basketball hoop with a basketball so you could jump very high and make a score. There was heaps of foam you could jump into. You could swing from a rope too.

You could also play dodgeball. It's fun when you play it because you can jump around on the trampolines instead of just standing there on the ground. It was so fun.

We also went to Waiwera Hot Pools. We drove to Waiwera in the 2 Church Vans. It was so long to get there. Finally we got there. We went inside and we payed for all of us who were swimming. Then a Lifeguard came to talk to us. He was talking about where to go like the Toilets and stuff.

They showed us our tables that we can sit at and eat and drink. I went to go get changed into my swimming togs. Then i came back with all my change. I grabbed my goggles and went to go swim with all the other kids.

There was a Movie pool too. It was so warm. I went inside and watched Shaun the Sheep. All the kids went to the front of the pool to watch the movie. After that i ran to the big slides. There was a slide called the Speed slide. It was yellow and 2 people could go on it at a time.

Then there was a really big green slide. It was called the Twister. It twisted around and around. It was so cool. I went back home to my family. We went to Okahu Bay and played on the park. I was looking forward to going back to school. It was really fun in the school holidays. The End. Thanks for reading my writing on my blog.
