Summer Learning Journey - Day #18 : Social Systems

Hey Bloggers! Here is Day #18 for you! I have been really busy. Anyways, Let's Begin!

Activity 1 : Mixed Member Proportional

In 1996, New Zealand adopted the MMP voting system. In September of 2017 we had a national election.

Everyone in New Zealand, over the age of 18, was invited to vote for who they wanted to form the next government in New Zealand.

The race was really close and in the end, three different political parties (Labour, New Zealand First and the Green Party), came together to form the new government.

It is called a ‘coalition government’ because it includes different people from different political parties.

I have been asked to imagine that I had to form a coalition government with two other people. I would partner up with my Uncle Chris and my Aunty Angie. I think they are really intelligent people who would be great people for the job. That's who I would pick!

Activity 2 : Migration

Over the past few decades, there has been a huge rise in the number of people coming to New Zealand to live and/or travel. Rachel was one of those people! In fact, she moved with her family to New Zealand in 2010 and she is so glad that she did. It’s a pretty amazing place to call home! At the moment she lives about 10 minutes from three stunning beaches and a beautiful national park.

Speaking of home, where do I live? On my blog I have been asked to post a picture of my hometown and provide a list of 3 things tourists would like to do and participate in. What do I like about my hometown?

I don't live in the Glen Innes suburb but I like to think Pt England, Tamaki, Wai o Taiki Bay and Panmure are apart of this suburb. I also grew up here and my great - grandparents live here moving soon as of the housing crisis happening right now.

Here a list of 3 things tourists could do :

• Swimming - they could swim at our local beaches in Pt England. It's a great place to visit on a sunny day. I recommend going with a lot of people. It's pretty boring with no one there. Especially fun when there is Movies in the Parks.
• Landscape - we have amazing beautiful landscapes such as reserves, beaches, creeks, rivers and our very own Mountain ( Maunga ) located in Mt Wellington.
• Entertainment - we have a lot of events that happen in our area such as : Movies in the Park, Te Oro Public Events, Matariki Festivals and more!

Bonus Activity : Modern Learning Enviroment

Over the past few years, a number of schools have changed the way that they teach. Instead of one teacher working in one classroom with one group of students, some schools have built huge classrooms where many teachers work together to teach a big group of students. This is called a ‘Modern Learning Environment’ (MLE).

I have been asked to imagine that I was a classroom teacher and was to design my very own classroom. I used Sumo Paint as my drawing picture provider.

Tables - I have created 3 circles to show an example of circular tables where the whole classroom could work together and help each other out.

Classroom Rug - I have shaped a big circular rug in the corner of the room that is huge and a bright colour.

Storage and Entertainment - I created a star shaped organiser to store things such as books, paper, pens, crayons and maybe some spot prizes and candy! Also a TV on in the corner I forgot to add.

Summer Learning Journey - Day #11 : White Picket Fences

Hey bloggers! Today is actually Week 4 but I was really busy with New Year Celebrations and more! Sorry. Anyways let's begin!

Activity 1 : Meat and Three Veg

It was common for women in the 1950s to stay home with their children and raise their family. They were called ‘housewives.’ Many housewives followed a simple rule when they prepared the evening meal: the ‘meat and three veg’ rule. This meant that they prepared dinners that included three different vegetables and a type of meat (eg. beef, lamb, or chicken).

On my blog I have been asked to tell you if I think the Meat and Three Veg was a good one. Do I like the rule? Would I enjoy a 1950's dinner meal? Why or why not? I personally think that the Meat and Three Veg is a good dinner meal for children that would not eat their vegetables.

I don't mind the rule but I think it's only necessary when needed only if the children wouldn't eat. Yes, maybe I would enjoy the meal. It sounds delicious but at the same time sounds a little bit plain! Why? because it's just an ordinary meal.

A lot of families these days would normally order pizza, or buy McDonald's, or have a chicken meal. But still I wouldn't mind.

Activity 2 : What's in a name?

During the 1950s the population of New Zealand grew by 400,000 people. That is huge! In fact, so many people were having babies that many people refer to this period in our history as the ‘baby boom.’ Popular baby names in 1950s New Zealand were:

I have been asked to read through the names on the list and state if they are popular names or not. A really popular boy name in my school is David! A lot of people don't use it as David but they translate it to the Pacific Island Language " Lea Faka Tonga " which is the language of Tonga.

Instead they go by the names of " Tevita ". I know a lot of people who has the name Tevita in my school!

Bonus Activity : Snail Mail!

In the 1950s, most people communicated with one another by writing letters. According to the NZ history website, New Zealanders sent over 200 million letters and postcards between 1950 and 1960. That is an average of 87 letters per person!

I even have my own penpals I write to! They live in China and South Korea. I still talk to them today.

Anyways I have been asked to design a postcard and imagine that I was living in the 1950's! I also have been asked to use Google Drawings! Here is my design! :

Mitchell - Writing Explanation 2 (How to be organised for school each day)

Hey bloggers! Here is another writing explanation I have written for you! I am going to tell you how to get organised for school each day before school starts.

The night before the school day you should already have got your uniform ready! Your School Shirt, School Shorts, School Jacket, School PE Top, and a new pair of socks to wear for the day. Maybe lay it out on the door of your bedroom. Then with your chromebook if it's really low with battery then you should charge it. Just plug your Chromebook charger into an outlet in your room!

Lunch! I recommend chucking out your lunchbox on the table or bench and start packing your lunch, so it's ready to pop in your bag after you've gotten ready! Make your own sandwich to help mum out. Remember healthy things. Pack some fruit, snacks or even a small box of juice! Now your lunch is ready.

In the morning make your bed. Get your uniform that is ready. If you're going to shower do it for at least 3 - 4 minutes! Pop in your lunchbox, quickly have breakfast. Do your hair, brush your teeth and clean your face and jump out the door. ( Actually jump out the door if you don't want to be in Re-Think) Also re-think is a place you go to @ lunchtime and clean up!

* Quick tips - Wake up @ 7:30 or earlier! Me and my sisters wake up @ 6:00 and get to school @ 7:00. Pretty Early!

Mitchell Summer learning journey Day # 15 - Art History

Hey blog viewers! Today is Day 15 of the Summer learning journey. Today's blog post will be about Art history. Let's begin!

Activity 1 - Painting

When you walk into the local gallery, the first piece of artwork that you see is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky called ‘Swinging.’ While I am looking at it, a staff member at the gallery comes up to me and asks me for my opinion of the painting. 

What do I think of it? I have been asked to answer these questions on what I think about it: What do you think of this painting? - I think the painting is very open minded. Do you like it? - Not really, I don't really see any meaning. If you could buy it and give it to someone, who would you choose? - I would choose my Grandmother. I think she would really like it because she has heaps of paintings in her house.

Activity 2 - Kids 100 years ago

After exploring the gallery you decide to walk across the street to the national museum. It is an amazing place! There is so much information about the history of the country in this museum. It’s hard to know where to start!

After pwalking for a little while you come across a display with pictures of children that were taken in 1901 (over 100 years ago)! In this picture, the children are working on a local farm, milking cows. They are not going to school. Back in those days, children usually went to school until they reached the age of 12 or 13. They then left school and went to work. Imagine that you were alive 100 years ago. How would you feel if you had to leave school at the age of 12? Would you be happy or sad? On your blog, tell us how you would feel. If I had to leave school at the age of 12 I would be Sad. I would be sad because people won't learn anymore for the future. That would be very sad. 

Bonus - The battle
In Te papa museum in Wellington is a huge exhibition. It is called Gallipoli The scale of our war. I have been asked to tell you 3 things I learned about the battle.
1. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
2. Every ANZAC day some people remember the soldiers by wearing a red poppy.
3. The ANZAC solider landed on Gallipoli in 1915.

Mitchell - Summer learning journey Day # 11

Hello bloggers. Sorry I have not been posting for a while. I was with my family camping all the way in Tutukaka near Whangarei. I will be posting some photos very soon. Let's begin Day 11 !
Activity 1 - Participating in a NZ sport
I have been asked to take

a picture of me participating in a New Zealand sport. Here it is: This is me on my first day of Cricket. In the picture I am holding a bat and a cricket ball. This was taken at the Point England reserve. I was playing for the Ellerslie Cricket Club with some of my friends. 

Activity 2 - Sporting hero

My sports hero is Mika Vukona. He plays for the Basketball team the New Zealand "Skycity Breakers" (Auckland). He plays the position Power foward. He is my sports hero because he is a great basketball player and he is a great person. He is also Fijian like me which is amazing although I have tongan in me too. 

Bonus - Best NZ sport
According to the Love New Zealand website, the most popular sports in New Zealand are rugby union, rugby league, netball, soccer and cricket.In my opinion I have to decide which is the best sport. I would definitely choose "Rugby union" for sure. Here is why I have chosen it to be the best NZ sport.

. William Webb Ellis created the sport rugby by picking up a rugby ball and started running with it
That's all the reasons why I choose Rugby Union as the best NZ sport.
