Summer Learning Journey - Day #19 : Contemporary Entertainment

Hey Bloggers! Today is Day #19 of the Summer Learning Journey. I've been so busy with travels down to Rotorua and so much more! Let's Begin!

Activity 1 : Moana

In late 2016, the movie Moana was released by Disney. It’s a beautiful story about a young Polynesian girl from the fictional island of Motunui, who goes on a big adventure.

I have been asked to watch the Disney Movie Trailer for " Moana " and then write a summary! I have seen the movie, I can include my favourite part! I also can tell you as much as I can about the movie.

Here are my answers!

What is the movie about? The movie is about a young girl named Moana who lives in the islands of polynesia, on her island Motunui and her mission is to find the demi-god Maui to get him to restore the heart of a island named Te Fiti.

Who are the main characters? The main characters are Moana, Maui, and Hei-Hei her ( Pet Chicken ).

Where do they go? They travel around and across the South Pacific Ocean to restore the heart of Te - Fiti.

Activity 2 : Country Calendar

Did you know that the longest running television show in New Zealand history is a programme called ‘Country Calendar’? It started on 6 March 1966 and has been running ever since. The programme includes stories of everyday New Zealanders, many of whom are farmers.

I have been asked to watch a video by Country Calendar. It's basically a show about the Country and farming. Here are some questions:

What do you think would be the most interesting and/or challenging things about being a farmer? I think the most interesting/challenging about being a farmer is transporting around the farm. It would be really annoying and stressful!

Would you would like to be a farmer when you are older. No.

Why/why not? Well I wouldn't want to do so much challenging stuff.

Give us, at least, two reasons to support your answer.

Bonus Activity : Singing a Different Tune

It may be hard to imagine, but one day you will graduate from high school and it will be time to decide what to do next. You may want to study at university, become an apprentice, go to training college, travel, or start working. There are so many options!

I have been asked to name my favourite song on my blog and write the lyrics. I don't really have a favourite song. I love heaps of songs and there are so many to choose from!

Summer Learning Journey - Day #1 : Arriving in NZ

Hey bloggers! I am so excited and thrilled to participate in this years Summer Learning Journey for 2017 - 2018! I've been waiting for this day ever since the beginning of this year! How about we start? Let's begin!

Activity 1 : The First Settlers

It's widely believed that the first people to arrive in New Zealand originated in Polynesia. The settlers eventually evolved and formed into their culture and people. Now they are called the " Maori " They have their own language, culture, traditions, food, and lots more.                                                                                 I have been asked to visit a link to read some short stories of a legendary mythical Polynesian Hero " Maui ". I have to post 3 facts on my blog that I have learned about Maui!
I've finished reading the text and here are my personal facts I have come up with!

* Fact 1 ~ Based on some mythical legends, Maui the Polynesian God was a shape-shifter    and could change into anything such as a bird, shark and heaps more you could think of    which is awesome!

* Fact 2 ~ In Polynesian Mythology, Ancient Polynesians would navigate across the Pacific    waters using stars. According to myths Maui's Hook could be seen in the sky and         Polynesians would navigate to the end of the hook. That's how they would discover new islands.

* Fact 3 ~ It is said that Maui was fishing one evening with his brothers in a waka. Then he pulled out his fishook to go fishing. It is said he pulled up the big fish which is widely known as the North Island and his waka became the South Island.


Activity 2 : Setting Sail

The first settlers that arrived in New Zealand must've been really brave! They had to leave their homes, maybe crops too, and sailed thousand miles across the Pacific Ocean to find new land to own. I have been asked to imagine that I was sailing in one of the Waka. I have been asked to write a letter to a friend about my voyage to New Zealand.  In the letter I have to be sure to tell them how I feel about moving to a new country.

Here is my letter I've written:

I just wrote about how the experience was and I also made up an address!

Bonus Activity : Waka Ama

Now days the people of New Zealand still use Waka. Instead of using the waka for transportation they sometimes use it for Waka Ama races in the ocean. I have been asked to watch a video about Waka Ama and I have to tell you if I would like to join one day or not. I've finished watching the video and it was really interesting. My opinion would have to be No. I would not want to join because it looks like you have to train alot and I don't like training for around 10 hours straight! Haha!

Celebrating Niue Language Week!

Fakalofa Lahi Atu Bloggers! Hey bloggers! Today in the school hall performed the Niuean Dance group which has roughly been practising their dance for 1 week. Did you know? In New Zealand it is Niuean Language Week! Yes! We are celebrating the culture and language of Niue and Niuean People which is really cool!

Niue Language Week Dance!

The huge group of children who performed today were amazing! They did special and cultural dances and also did a haka in Niuean at the end. The boys were also shouting from the stage too, like fierce warriors. The theme for the week is "Koe Vagahau Niue Koe Atefua, he tagata Niue" which means The Language of Niue is The Heart Of the Niuean People! 

The children were wearing and dressed in Niuean costumes and clothes. The girls were wearing a lava-lava, a white t-shirt and a necklace or a lei. The boys were wearing a lava-lava and a niuean sisi which is a white shredded costume you can wear around your neck and your ankles. 

Their performance was great! Thanks to Mrs Lagitipu and Ms Teleso for teaching the dance. Also parents too who also helped!
