Mitchell - Summer Learning Journey # Day 1

Activity 1

The country I have chosen is Japan. I have decided to choose Japan because it has many different traditional sports such as Karate,Sumo wrestling and much more. I would really like to participate in these sports because it encourages you to have confidence in self defense.

The other reason I have chosen Japan is because it is a country with thousands of islands. It has a really beautiful paradise and I would really love to visit the islands.

Activity 2

1. In Japanese language Japan means Nihon. That means Sun Origin.
2. Japan sometimes suffers from acid rain which is caused by gases that come from powerplants.
3. In some Japanese bedrooms the floor is covered with Tatami. It is thick grass that is weaved to sleep on.

  1. Hi Mitchell! It is so awesome to see you participating in the Summer Learning Journey! I know that you are an amazing holiday blogger and I can't wait to see what you accomplish this summer! When you go to Japan, what sports are you thinking of playing? Are any of them sports that are not played in NZ?

  2. Kia ora Mitchell!

I'm Mark, one of the teachers working on the Summer Learning Journey programme you have just started, and may I just say WOW! 3 whole days of activities already!? I can't wait to read the next ones!

Something you won't know about me is that I have traveled to Japan several times! It really is as interesting and amazing as you think. I have visited Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama, and Kamogawa - all beautiful and interesting in their own ways. Kamogawa for example, is one of the best places to surf in Japan.

Another Japanese martial art you might be interested in is Jujitsu. I studied a Korean martial art called Tae Kwon Do, which is very similar to Karate, but I think Jujitsu is more practical for self defense.

Japan has an amazing history too, with lots of interesting stories and ancient castles which still exist today! When I toured Osaka castle, I walked through an ancient courtyard where Samurai fought to protect their lord and his family. It was very special.

I hope you're having a great summer holiday and to read more of your blogs soon!

    Take care,

    Mark

  3. こんにちは Kon'nichiwa Mitchell,
My name is Tania and I am a Manaiakalani Outreach Facilitator. I have been emailing with Rachel and she has told me all about The Summer Learning Journey, it's great to check out your blog and see you have made a start. Japan is a great country to choose to visit. I have some family living in Japan so have been to visit them. They live in Yokohama which is very close to Tokyo. We went on a bullet train to Kyoto. We went in spring time so got to see all the Cherry Blossoms which are very beautiful. I really liked seeing the ladies dressed up in their traditional kimonos too. What sports are you hoping to play in Japan? I wonder if they are different to the sports that you play in New Zealand. Have a great time learning and sharing.
